Red Bull BC One: A Brief History

Since it’s inception in the 70s, born from the Hip Hop culture that hit New York’s ghettos B-Boys have pushed the limits of each other’s artistic skill, creativity and athleticism. Red Bull BC One is the event for B-Boys around the world, bringing the world’s premier performers to compete against the best. The concept is to bring B-Boy battling back to its roots through one-on-one competition and not focussing on crew battles that pushed the original forms into the background.

Hip Hop exploded onto the scene in South Bronx in the 1970s. In a need to express individuality people turned to creating their own artistic visions of music, art and culture. Bringing about the birth of rap, scratching, rapping and breaking/B-Boying.

DJ Kool Herc is credited with originating Hip Hop, providing an alternative to violent gang culture that riddled the Bronx and the budding popularity of disco. B-Boying was a style of street dancing using the breaks in dance music loops, in responses to dancers DJ Kool Herc isolated breaks in music and switched between one and the other; often using two copies of the same record played simultaneously on two turn-table set ups allowing him to lengthen breaks and the dancers time to elaborate on their moves. The heart of battling was always to see who could bring the most innovation, creativity and athleticism into each battle. The popularity began to dwindle in the late 70s and even became prone to parody in the 80s; but that didn’t stop the dedication of those who took it seriously and tried to push the limits as much as possible. Today B-Boying is recognised for it’s unique dance style.

In 2004, Red Bull decided it was time that it was time the world stood and gave B-Boying and the dancers the respect it deserves as artists and athletes. Being held in Biel Switzerland, it attracted some of the best B-Boys the world had to offer. Keeping it within its original vision of one-on-one battling bringing the best of the best, the most respected crews in the world being represented.

In 2009, B-Boying is going home; after touring the globe it is returning full circle to New York. With two previous champions competing this promises to be the biggest BC One yet.
